Recruitment and Job Security as Correlates of Academic Staff Productivity in Tertiary Institutions in Southwest, Nigeria

The study examined recruitment and job security as correlates of academic staff productivity in tertiary institutions in Southwest, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the survey type was adopted in the study. The population consisted of academic staff of the public tertiary institutions (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education) in Southwest, Nigeria. The sample for this study consisted of 1324 academic staff selected from 12 public federal and state tertiary institutions in the Southwest, Nigeria. Multi – stage sampling procedure was used in the selection of the sample for the study. The data for this study were collected through the use Recruitment and Job Security Questionnaire (RJSQ) and Academic Staff Productivity Questionnaire (ASPQ). The instruments were validated by experts in the areas of Tests and Measurement and Educational Management. The reliability of the instruments was carried out using the test re-test method. A reliability coefficient of 0.92 was obtained for RJSQ and 0.89 for the ASPQ. The data obtained for the study were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that the staff productivity of academic staff was moderate while recruitment and job security were important factors in determining academic staff productivity. In addition, it was revealed that there was no significant difference in academic staff productivity among Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. It was recommended among others that management of tertiary institutions should continue to ensure due process when recruiting academic staff so that the competent ones are employed.
